Astronomy
It's what we're all here for, isn't it?
From our meeting site on the outskirts of Coffs Harbour, we have the opportunity to enjoy the night sky after each meeting, with several members usually bringing telescopes or binoculars for all to use. It's not the best site in the world, but is sufficiently far away from bright lights to allow viewing of not only the Moon and planets, but some of the fainter nebulae and even a galaxy or two as well. Although a young society, we have an enthusiastic and knowledgable membership, keen to discuss current events, observations and equipment on meeting nights. Founder member Win Howard presents a monthly round-up of news items from the world of Astronomy, which can be found under "President's Report." Earlier reports from Win are archived on the site as well. "Observing" gives general comments about seeing the sky with CHAS, and may feature current objects of interest. Astronomy, being one of the sciences, is full of jargon and acronyms. If you are uncertain about some of the terms used in astronomical circles, "What Does THAT Mean?" is the page for you. We are always pleased to hear about observations made by members. This is their page; whether a sketch, a photograph or a written description, "Members' Observations" is the place to go. Experienced amateur astronomers are usually only too happy to give advice about telescopes: what to buy - or more importantly, what NOT to buy. If you're thinking of spending money on a telescope, read "Buying A Telescope" first and come along to one of our meetings for some more personal advice. |
